    Thanks for this chance to pen down our thoughts and lessons learnt from our daily reading.

    I was reading Matthew 1 and I recalled the lessons learnt from “The Life of Christ Part 1″ regarding Christ’s genealogy. I have forgotten the details and so I went back to the notes and revised certain facts.

    In Matthew 1, Matthew traced Christ’s genealogy from Abraham to David and then to the Lord Jesus Christ since Matthew was writing mainly to the Jews. After David, he followed the line of Solomon to Joseph. (Abraham->David->Solomon->Joseph->Jesus)

    In Luke 3, Luke traced Christ’s genealogy from Adam to David but unlike Matthew, he split and followed the line from Nathan the son of David to Mary. (Adam->David->Nathan->Mary->Jesus)

    Joseph and Mary were both from the line of David. This proves that Christ is rightfully called the son of David and this is according to prophecy. We have believed on the rightful Son of David.

    Thank God for this opportunity to revise and hope that others will join in also.

  • Hi Andrew, Just as you wrote, our Lord Jesus Christ is the promised “Son of David” and “Son of Abraham.” He is the divine Saviour that God has promised through His prophets. Matthew used this messianic title to refer to Jesus about 8 times. Mark and Luke each have it 3 times. Two blind men followed Jesus crying out to Him, “the Son of David” (Matt 9:27, see also Matt 20:30); and they received their sight. Interestingly, this title was used by several people while appealing to Jesus for help (9:27; 15:22; 20:30–31). Let us also call on “the Son of David;” He will help us! Ascribe praise to the Great Son of David – “Hosanna to the Son of David!” (Matt 21:9,15). He’s coming again to reign from David’s throne! O Come Lord, Jesus! O reign over us, Jesus, the King Eternal!

    Thank God for using you to initiate this bible reading journey.
    It is my burden to finish the whole bible (KJV) in a year. Hopefully by God’s grace i can do it this year as i failed to accomplish it last year. In the past, i was able to read it through several times but using the Today’s English Version and without much understanding. Now, it is my prayer that God may grant me the hunger and thirst for His word. May the Lord sustain us in this journey. God bless.

    I must confess that on the 2nd day of the year I lagged behind in my reading but thank God that today, I manage to catch up.
    One of the thoughts that came to my mind when I read Genesis 3:24 is when God chased Adam and Eve out of the garden that they may not eat from the tree of life, it was God punishing the couple; and He was right in doing so. Could they have lived on and on in sin, if they had access to the tree of life?

    Though i was a member of the fundamental baptist before, my knowledge of the bible was not very deep. As i come across Matthew 3:16, it leads me to think that maybe this is one of the references with regards to immersion.

    That is how most baptist brethren teach. In actual fact, there is nothing in this event that shows it was immersion. “Out of the water” is not a reference to immersion; it only shows that he came out of the Jordan river, where John was baptizing. Take note that “he was baptized” already before he came out of the water. It does not say how he was baptized, whether by pouring, sprinkling or immersion. Just because He went to the river, there is no proof that he was immersed. John was ministering there, so he went there.

    In fact , the context of the passage, especially 3:15 (”to fulfil all righteousness”) suggests sprinkling. We need to ask why His baptism is said to be the fulfilling of righteousness. Now, keep in mind also that fulfilling righteousness means obeying the law of God. In other words, the phrase is pointing to the fulfillment the O.T. requirement of baptism. The O.T baptism that Jesus fulfilled was that of the ceremonial sprinkling at the beginning of the ministry priesthood (Numbers 8:6-7a “Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them. And thus shalt thou do unto them, to cleanse them: Sprinkle water of purifying upon them. . .”). It was the beginning of Jesus’ public priestly ministry, which He came to fulfil (Hebrews 5:4-9). Only sprinkling was the right kind of baptism that John could have administered for Christ in fulfilling all righteousncess (in obedience to the law).

    Any way, all the O.T baptisms were sprinkling and not immersion. John being the last of the O.T prophets could not have broken the Scriptural practice.

    Well, next time when we meet, if you need more clarification, we can talk about it more.

    God warned Adam and eve, “in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (Gen 2:17). When they ate the forbidden fruit in disobedience, they were driven out of the garden of Eden, thus keeping them away from the tree of life. This was a clear indication that they were banished to face physical death, though by faith in “her seed” (Gen 3:15), which is Jesus Christ, they could receive salvation. God had banished them from the Eden and kept away from the tree of life “lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever” (v.22).

    Hi Pastor
    While reading Gen 7:2 “Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and the beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.”

    Question
    Why clean beast by sevens..are they to be reserved for sacrifice after Noah came out of the ark? Kindly advise.

    Also while reading Genesis 5, a rough addition of the age of each character at the birth of their son that was mentioned in Gen 5(eg. Adam live 130 years and begat Seth, and Seth lived 105 years and beget Enos)…I got the figure 1556 years. Is this calculation correct? If so, can I conclude that the period from Adam to Noah is about 1556 years. Kindly revert. Thanks.

    I’ve read according to the list, thus far 8 chapters have been read, an average of 4 per day. Its a REAL struggle to be honest, but i’d like to share some blessings for our encouragement to press on!

    God’s creation is a very good creation (Gen 1:3, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25, 31)
    Any deaths would made His creation no good.

    The “lights in the firmament” (Gen 1:14) has 2 purpose
    -first is to rule day/night,
    -second to be for signs, seasons, days, years which was once fulfilled in Matthew 2:3, 10,(first coming of Christ) and will be fulfilled in Matthew 24:29 (second coming of Christ)

    God kept the 7th day holy (Gen 2:2-3)
    He kept by resting from all his work and progress of work.
    We can see progress in His creation work in Gen 2:9 (to grow trees)
    The thought is, are we deceiving ourselves in keeping the sabbath day holy but not resting from progress? Like fulfilling any “required study” in a course/programme which is chosen by us?

    God does not make man to be idle. (Gen 2:15)

    It is not good that the man should be alone (Gen 2:18)
    But isn’t the man with God? with all of God’s creations and animals?
    Yet God said, It is not good that the man should be alone.

    The serpent instigated Eve to eat the fruit (Gen 3:1)
    After Adam ate the forbidden fruit,
    God initiated the investigation by asking Adam first
    God then asked Eve
    God cursed the serpent w/o hearing what the serpent has to say [There's a blessing within the cursings]
    Could it be because the Serpent instigated Eve, therefore the serpent wasn’t given a chance to explain itself?
    Although God knows all things yet He wants to hear our confession and explanation before pronouncing judgment.
    Food for thought: Is God fair for not giving the serpent a fair trial? maybe, maybe not? [Because Satan had fallen from heaven, and his main job is to be "The Accuser of the Brethren"]

    Eve saw that the tree was pleasant to the eyes (Gen 3:6)
    Most people would agree that Eve sinned the lust of the eyes.
    Food for thought: Could Eve blame God for making trees “pleasant to the sight” (Gen 2:9)

    Be ye angry and sin not (Gen 4:6-8)
    Cain was wroth,
    God told him, “Sin lieth at the door”
    Cain talked with Abel (seems to imply that Cain initiated the conversation)
    And when opportunity arises, “when they were in the field”, Cain slew him.
    Q) What does it mean in “Sin lieth at the door”
    -Is it [in this case] the act of killing his brother is prompting him?
    -Isn’t it a sin to be bitter and bear grudge against thy neighbour?
    Reflection: When we are filled with strong emotions, are we very much tempted to sin? to outburst? to rampage?

    The product of the murderer (decendents of Cain)
    -First polygamy (Gen 4:19)
    -Second murderer (Gen 4:23)
    -Have a lot of material possessions (Gen 4:20)
    -Professionals[Worldly accolades as emphasized] (Gen 4:21-22)

    The godly line (decendents of Seth)
    God repeated that He created man in the likeness of God and blessed them (Gen 5:1-2)
    It is to show that the line of Seth is a godly one after God’s own image.
    -No worldly accolades, material possessions, evil deeds were mentioned [not emphasized]
    Adam produced 2 who walked with God
    -Enoch (Gen 5:22, 24)
    -Noah (Gen 6:9)

    God will not always strive with man (Gen 6:3)
    -Immediate result, human lifespan shorten
    -May result in pronouncing of Judgment upon individuals/group of people
    Lesson: don’t take God’s longsuffering for granted.
    Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD even when God was preparing to pour His wrath upon the earth.
    Q) In bad times do you STILL see God as a good God?

    The fallen race, the mind of wicked individual
    -Every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually (Gen 6:5)
    -Filled the earth with violence and corruption (Gen 6:11-13)
    Noah obeyed God accordingly in the midst of all these people.

    God still remembers
    -King David’s adultery (Matthew 1:6)
    Although God forgives and will not hold sins against us, God does not lose memory of what we have done.

    The Viginity of Mary
    -It remains with her until Jesus was born (Matthew 1:25)
    -Therefore in no wise was Jesus “made by the will of the flesh” of His earthly father Joseph.

    It is good to know that you are reading through the Bible.

    The reason for God’s command to take clean animals by sevens is not stated in those chapters. Your guess that more clean animals were needed for sacrifice is the widely accepted explanation.

    From Adam until the end of Noah is said to be about 1656. (a difference [=/-] of few years are possible.

    Tks for the response.

    I thank the Lord for your initiative to encourage us to read through the Bible in a year and also open your blog for discussions and questions.

    The session for discussions and questions is an answer from the Lord to my prayer. I told the Lord that sometimes when I read the Bible on my own there are certain portions of scripture which I do not understand and normally I will “KIV” these and look out for explanation/exposition through sermons on Sunday or messages during fellowship meeting or prayer meeting. In the past the Lord has always revealed them to me through one of these modes. But now, with your discussion blog I can immediately seek explanation for “difficult” passages. May the name of the Lord be praised!

    I have just on the bible reading plan today and in the process of doing some catch up for the last 8 days. I must admit that it was reading the exchanges on your blog and having the opportunity to interact with you concerning certain portions in the bible that has motivated me to embark on this plan.

    I have a question about the Sermon on the Mount. I used to be taught that in the Sermon on the mount, Jesus is expounding on the perfection of the law. This condemns the best of men, that it might bring us to the end of ourselves and turn to Christ. In other words, its a life that only Christ can live.

    How do we apply the Sermon on the mount in our lives? Not too long ago, I heard a pastor preach on ‘love for enemies’. He insisted in no uncertain terms that this teaching implies that a Christian has to always turn the other cheek and to go the second mile, because he has no personal rights and he is a servant to all men. But by the same token, should he not insist on plucking out the right eye and cutting the right hand when he sins?

    It is wonderful to know that you are also coming on board to read through the Bible in a year. Praise the Lord! May more people of God be stirred in their hearts to read and meditate upon His Word! We need more men who build their lives on God’s Word!

    Sermon on Mount is our Saviour’s description of what Christians are meant to be. Those words of our Lord would put many who call themselves Christians to shame, because they neither meditate on nor appropriate them in their lives. In those words, the Lord is delineating the Christian character. They are Christ’s standard for our life here on earth. They are the keys to living a “blessed life” or “happy life’ on earth. In fact, every principle in the Sermon on the Mount is found elsewhere in the New Testament.

    Though Jesus is the perfect example of living out the principles of the Sermon on Mount, it is not a mere description of His character. it is His expectation of His followers. For instance, he commands us, “Love your enemies.” Now that is a very obvious command to the readers, especially to the Christians. It was not a statement about Himself, but His principle for us to abide by.

    Dealing lovingly with those who hurt us is Christ-likeness that Christians must cultivate. We are not be violent and revengeful people. “Recompense to no man evil for evil” (Rom 12:17). In Romans 12:19-21, we read, “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”

    This does not mean we cannot protect ourselves or seek help from relevant authorities for needed assistance. Jesus is not encouraging ourselves to become silent victims of bullies, thugs and criminals. Rather, He is teaching us not to be easily provoked. He encourages us to be forgiving, gracious and peaceful people. The best way to deal with someone who slaps you is not to return the slap, but wisely and gently avoiding further violence. Suffering hurts that are committed against us for Christ’s sake, without revenging, is the highest form of life to which Jesus calls us.

    Now, Jesus statement, “if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee” (Matt 5:17). It is obvious that Jesus is not teaching that if you physically pluck out your eye, your spiritual and moral problem of a lustful heart can be eradicated. Here the Lord employs a linguistic device that is common to all languages, namely, hyperbole. It is a specially designed exaggeration for the purpose of emphasis. This is similar to our English expression, “I’ll skin you alive.” It is obvious to us what it means. It is a figurative expression that means ‘I will severely rebuke and punish you.’ Likewise, Jesus was urging His hearers to deal with the problem of the lust of the eye in a resolute manner. The problem of lust is tragic, if not dealt with. For not doing so, has eternal consequence. So Jesus’ point is that one should put an end to avoid lust of the eye.

    Many thanks for your reply. I now see the principles of the Sermon of the Mount repeated consistently throughout the scriptures, still applicable to all Christians today, as opposed to the dispensational view that I have believed.

    Since we are on Matthew chapter 8 for today’s reading, I would like your further advice for a matter that I have found very disturbing in my Christian walk.

    In the Gospel accounts alone, we can find several apparent discrepancies. One such example is Matthew Chapter 8 – the healing of a Centurion’s servant. We find the centurion going to Jesus and conversing directly with Him in verses 5 – 9. However, a similar account in Luke chapter 7 tells a different story, where he sent his subordinates to see Jesus in verses 3 – 6.

    There are other places in the Gospels, as well as other parts of the bible, where all it takes is a plain reading of the different accounts of similar events and puzzling questions will arise. Questions such as how did Judas died? Did he hang himself, as according to Matthew Chapter 27:5? Or did he fall headlong…and all his bowels gushed out, according to Acts 1:18. Hanging himself and falling headlong seems to be quite a contradiction.

    Is there a way to harmonize all these seeming discrepancies? Are there any available books that deals at length with these issues that seem to imply the Bible has mistakes? It seems difficult for me to just sweep all these under the carpet of faith.

    I’m quite confused what lesson we can get from Jacob’s deception in Genesis 27 if there is. Knowing that he was blessed by Isaac despite of this sin.

    After reading Genesis 28:20-21 my understanding is that he was not yet a believer up to this point although he knew God as stated in verse 16.

    Please continue to pray for me and my wife that we can sustain our daily bible reading. Thank you and God bless.

    I’ve just started using the Bible Reading Plan and will endeavour to catch up for the past 10+ days. I have some questions which maybe, those who know, can also help to address?

    1) Garden of Eden: since Adam and Eve got chased out, can we say that it is not on Earth?

    2) Chap 1v28: why is the word “replenish” used? Does it mean something happened previously?

    3) Dinosaurs and cavemen: where does these fit into the scheme of things? I know we did not evolve from monkeys or apes. Would like to find out more about what Bible Presbyterian church believes.

    Thanks for this initiative. I’ve always attempted to read the whole bible but distractions some how manage to creep in and I loose focus.

    Dear Pastor,

    I was blessed by how Joseph look so highly of God. He feared God more than Potiphar and God’s wrath was in his mind when the wicked wife of Potiphar tried to seduce him. In Genesis 39:9, Joseph’s utmost concern is to be pure for the sake of the name of his God which he is a witness. Joseph replied to Potophar’s wife in this manner, “…How can I do this great wickedness, and sin against my God?” God’s anger was his main concern.

    It is my prayer that I may have the same faith and focus of service to my God as like that of Joseph’s. May the Lord grant us all a blessed time of learning God’s Word together.

    Thank you Pastor Koshy for making this reading an interactive section. Because of laziness and human frailties, I am not consistent in my reading but I am comforted even just to know that someone is praying for me to persevere and I am not alone in my reading of the Bible for one year, I am together with my brethren whom God has given to be my encouragement.     I am sorry that it took several days to respond to your post. Because of my very busy schedule from Tuesday to Sunday. I am only able to look into my blog on Mondays. If I will be able to find sometime to respond to your posts on other days, I will certainly try to do that. Anyway, please keep posting!

    Firstly, let me say a word about “apparent discrepancies” in the Bible. They are not real discrepancies; as you mentioned they are mere apparent discrepancies. Even if, we cannot find a clear answer to our question, let us not waver in our minds about the perfection of God’s word. The Bible is infallible, inerrant for it is perfectly preserved, just as the Lord promised (Psalm 12:6-7; Matthew 5:18; Mark 13:31, 1 Peter 1:25). The Lord has promised all of His inspired words to be preserved to the end of times. We praise God for the King James Bible, which is the best and most faithful English translation of the inspired words in the original Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, which He has preserved.

    The differences between Matthew’s and Luke’s accounts of the healing of the Centurion’s servant do not constitute error or real contradiction. While Luke’s records that certain emissaries were sent on the centurion’s behalf, Matthew records that the centurion spoke with Jesus directly. This could well be because Matthew, as he often does, gives a condensed version of the event. Moreover, in those days, when a man in authority sent representatives, it was as good as he himself was present to communicate. This likely explains the difference.

    In a similar way, we can also show that there is no discrepancy concerning Judas’ death. Matthew records the mode in which Judas attempted his death – hanging. While Luke records Peter’s depiction of Judas’ end, in which he paid special attention to the outcome of Judas’ attempt to take his life by hanging. Judas’ was certainly in great anguish and in haste to die. He might not have paid much attention to the strength of the rope or to the knot he made to suspended himself. Obviously, something unexpected happened while he hanged himself, resulting his falling headlong. What “a double death, with double pains and double horrors–the reward of his aggravated guilt.”

    Our faith in the infallibility of the Scripture helps us to see that the so-called discrepancies are not really mistakes or contradictions, and it also helps us to look at those passages with humility of mind that we might be taught of the Spirit. It is not intellectualism that we need to know His Word, but faith. We must believe that even what appear to be contradicting are, in actual fact, mutually enhancing records by various writers. If we cannot harmonise, it is merely our inability to see things correctly rather than actual errors in the Bible. Faith must be our rule and guide in studying His Word.

    I am glad to know that you are keeping up with the Bible reading. Keep it up.

    I am sorry that I did not answer your questions immediately. As you know, I am very busy in these days. I can only find sometime on Mondays in these days to attend to the blog. Pray for me that I can keep up with all these for His glory, and for the edification of the His people.

    In the account of Genesis 27, Jacob certainly appears as a deceiver. He stole his brother’s blessing by deceiving their blind father, Isaac. As the story continues into the following chapters, we see how God in his great mercy transforms him. Like all of us, Jacob was also a terrible sinner, saved by grace. Jacob was chosen not because he was better than his brother, Esau. They both were sinners. God, in His sovereign mercy, chose Jacob! Is it not also our story?

    In Genesis 28:20-21, we see the Lord intervening in Jacob’s life, and assuring him of divine help and protection. It is hard for me to say this is where he really became a believer. It may be the case. I do not know. It could be that He believed in God of his father (Isaac) and grandfather (Abraham), as he grew up in their tents. In 28:4, when Isaac blessed him, he was told that the blessing of Abraham which God has promised will be upon him. So certainly he knew about God and His covenantal blessings. But he might have been an immature believer, still struggling with his youthful foolishness. Please notice what He said when he was awakened from his sleep – “Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.” (v.16)

    May the Lord strengthen your family to rejoice in the reading of His Word.

    How glad I am to know that yet another brother is catching up with the reading of the Scriptures. Praise the Lord!

    1. The existence on Garden of Eden on earth cannot be verified in our time. Two biblical reasons can be cited for why the location cannot be verified. Firstly, God has commanded the cherubim to guard it so no man can enter it (Gen 3:24). Secondly, during the universal flood of Noah, God has destroyed everything on earth, and also it has caused topographical changes to the earth. I believe that its actual location on the globe can never be established.
    2. The original Hebrew word for ‘replenish’ in Genesis 1:28 is mala’, which simply means fill. It does not suggest it was formerly occupied. In old English, that word simply means “to fill with persons or animals” or ‘ to supply fully’ (Mirriam-Webster).
    3. In the Bible, we do not have any terms “caveman,” “Neanderthals,” or “prehistoric man.” According to the bible, every man who lived in this earth is a descendant of Adam and Eve, the first couple God made. We know the flood causes the entire human race to be wiped off, except Noah’s family. So we conclude that all men who thereafter lived were descendants of Noah. After that global upheaval of Noah’s period, people might have lived in caves, and used tools made of stones. In fact, there are passages in the Bible that suggests that men who have forsaken cities and towns, living in wilderness and mountains (Job 12:24,25). The fossil evidences also show that the so-called ‘cavemen’ were human beings.
    4. We believe dinosaurs lived together with mankind (Job 40:15-24). God created all animals, including animals that have gone extinct, like the dinosaurs, on the sixth day of his creation. After the global flood, which caused traumatic changes to the earth’s conditions, have caused many animals to become extinct.
    Delight yourself in the reading of God’s Word.

    The Lord did not want popularity about this matter at that time because it might cause many unwanted response from the unbelieving Jews. They might accuse Him, having a league with the demons, etc. You may remember that the Jews did accuse Jesus with just that (Mark 3:22). At that juncture, Christ did not want people to think that He was trying to get praise or commendation from the devils. Jesus didn’t want people to think demons were His allies, or His representatives or His heralds. His stance seemed to be- “Let them slowly observe what is happening and make their conclusions.” Moreover, it might foment an angry reaction from the Jews; and it was not yet time for such a violent reaction against Him. Every aspect of Christ’s ministry was well-planned and timed by God.

    Thanks for taking the time to reply in spite of your busy schedule. Have been looking forward to it. I understand your point about approaching the Scriptures in faith.

    Can I ask you another question regarding this issue? Again it concerns Judas Iscariot. Matthew writes of the Prophet Jeremiah prophesying Judas betrayal of Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. In Matthew 27:9, it reads ‘Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the Prophet…’ This is interesting as this prophecy is not found in Jeremiah but in Zechariah 11:12-13. This is one of the favorite places that liberals and Muslim scholars would cite in their attack on Biblical inerrancy. What is more baffling is that even John Calvin himself seems to have concluded this as an error. (I lifted the following quote from the internet so correct me if I’m wrong) In the Commentary on a Harmony of the Evangelists by John Calvin, Matthew, Mark and Luke, 3:177: “The passage itself plainly shows that the name of Jeremiah has been put down by mistake, instead of Zechariah, for in Jeremiah we find nothing of this sort, nor any thing that even approaches to it.”

    There were other Christian writers such as Augustine who apparently thought of this as an error but I singled out John Calvin in particular as the Bible Presbyterian Church is Calvinist in its theology and identifies the Reformed faith as the first root of Singapore Bible Presbyterianism.

    Commandment to the children of Israel
    Leviticus 25:2to4
    Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto the LORD.
    Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof;
    But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the LORD: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.

    When God commanded us to do something, He will not leave us to do it with our own strength, but with the command He will also provide us a solution, if we will obey & keep his commandments.

    Below verses are His provision for the command to keep a sabbath of rest unto the land on the seventh year. And, BEHOLD, what a GRACIOUS PROVISION. Indeed He is Jehovah Jireh — OUR GRACIOUS PROVIDER.

    Leviticus 25:20to22
    And if ye shall say, What shall we eat the seventh year? behold, we shall not sow, nor gather in our increase:
    Then I will command my blessing upon you in the sixth year, and it shall bring forth fruits for three years.
    And ye shall sow the eighth year, and eat yet of old fruit until the ninth year, until her fruits come in ye shall eat of the old store.

    I’d like to share the major blessing i got after reading the account of Joseph. If we stay pure and faithful to the Lord, the people around us (especially unbelieving family and friends) will be amazed of Gods blessings, just like Joseph’s master Pothipar (an unbeliever). For the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

    Firstly, I would answer your question concerning the Matthews’ reference to Old Testament prophecy concerning Judas’ betrayal of Christ. Please read the following explanation.
    Matthew referred to Judas’ betrayal of Christ as the fulfilment of a prophecy of Jeremiah. But the prophecy which Matthew quoted has close resemblance Zechariah 11:12-13. So many think it was an error on Matthew’s part, etc. It should be noted that there are also similarities between Matthew’s words and the ideas in Jeremiah 19:1, 4, 6, 11. Though Jeremiah may not appear to be making direct references to the event attached to Judas’ betrayal, there are ideas that have some relations to it. We might say Matthew used Zechariah chiefly, but had Jeremiah 19 prominently in mind as well, especially due to its theme of judgment on Israel. Why then did Matthew refer only to Jeremiah? The solution to this problem is probably that Matthew had both prophets in mind but only mentioned the “major” prophet by name. (A similar situation is found in Mark 1:2-3, where Mark mentioned the Prophet Isaiah but quoted directly from both Isaiah and Malachi.) In addition, another explanation is that Jeremiah, in some of the ancient Jewish rabbinic tradition (in documents, like, the Babylonian Talmud) was placed first among the prophets, and his book represented all the other prophetic books.
    Matthew was then quoting from the collection of the books of the prophets, and cited Jeremiah since it was the first and therefore the identifier.

    Secondly, with reference to your citation of John Calvin’s comment on the above matter. What you have cited must be read in the fuller context of his commentary. What you have cited is what Calvin said about how the passage appears to the reader. But before that comment he humbly wrote, “How the name of Jeremiah crept in, I confess that I do not know nor do I give myself much trouble to inquire.” This means, Calvin exercised humility to acknowledge the difficulty he felt in explaining the passage, instead of insisting that it might be a mistake, as it appears.

    No man, including John Calvin, is perfect. We are all fallible men. We should not always attempt to say, I know all things, or I can solve all the apparent problems in the Bible. If any one says that this is a mistake in the Bible, I choose to disagree with him, even if I don’t know how to explain. “Let God be true, but every man a liar” (Romans 3:4; Psalm 119:160).
